West Part of Johor Family Trip 7 days 6 nights (Day 3)

Pulau Kukup is an island with no living facilities, so it is necessary to take boat to go there. The place to board the boat is at Kukup International Ferry Terminal. The pier where tourists to board the boat looked very informal. There was no counter to purchase the boat riding tickets as well. However, there will be some Chinese uncles collected the boat riding fee from you if you wished to take a ride. We had paid RM10 for the boat riding where RM5 for each adult while children were free of charge. The fee was not only included a ride to Pulau Kukup but also to a floating fish farm. Tourists could stay at Pulau Kukup or fish farm as long as they wanted but not for overnight.

Taman Negara Johor Pulau Kukup

It took about 5 minutes to Pulau Kukup from the pier. The weather was very nice and the sun was shining brightly. We enjoyed the sea breeze blowing on the face and saw countless of floating fish farm on the sea. Before dropped us to the pier of Pulau Kukup, the Chinese uncle advised us must show our respect to the natural and animals of this island. After purchased the entrance tickets for Pulau Kukup, went toilet urinate and safe kept all those colourful drinks into our bags to avoid attract the attention from the macaque monkeys that inhabit in this island, then only we started to walk along the 600 meters long walkway in this mangrove island.

The mangrove forest of Pulau Kukup was very well maintained.

Pulau Kukup is the biggest mangrove forest in Malaysia and the world. Though the weather is scorching hot, but with the shade of the mangrove trees, we did not feel the heat too much. We could hear various sound from the animals here when walked along the walkway. As it was low tide, we could see some mudskippers and mangrove trees flowers, seeds in the mangrove swamp. We saw rubbishes, such as Styrofoam and plastic bottle trapped on the mangrove tree root which were swept to here during high tide.

The signboards that set up along the walk way, not only indicated the types of mangrove trees but also reminded the visitors not to disturb the environment and the animals here by whispering instead of shout or talk loudly and to walk slowly at the walkway.

There was an observatory tower near the end of the walkway. However, the observatory tower was under maintenance, so we couldn’t have a bird view scenery from the top of this tower.

After that, we took the boat we rode just now to one of the nearby floating fish farms. Mangrove trees protect the shoreline and floating fish farm from being eroded by strong waves. The fish farms that floating on the sea all supported by the big blue bucket only, so the fish farm was not suitable for large number of visitors. My kids were so scare to see a black dog tied to a pole near the entrance. The young man who took care of this fish farm scooped out a puffer fish from the farm to let us see. In order to please the tourists, this puffer fish became a tool for the fish farm here to show the tourist by finger press to its unique natural defence mechanism where it fills its extremely elastic stomach with air when it was out from the water until a spherical shape. However, this act already caused the damage and injury to the puffer fish stomach, it was no longer can fill the air or water like a healthy puffer fish. After he put the puffer fish to the water, he continued to scoop out a horseshoe crab for us to touch or took photo. He explained only the eggs from the horseshoe crab will be eaten only. While waiting for the boat, we took a closer look at the various species of sea creatures being cultivated in the farm. The kids were so lucky to see the sea urchin and the blue crab.

Horseshoe crab

We had our lunch at Restaurant Kukup Laut that near the exit of the pier. With a big kid and 2 toddlers to seafood restaurant, I thought we didn’t have extravagant time for us to slowly enjoy the crabs here. Hence, we just ordered the mantis prawn and nestum prawn to vent our hatred. After finished our lunch, we cancelled our plan to visit the Kampung Nelayan Air Masin fishing village as we found our kids started to lost their patience under the scorching hot sun. Heard from the local people here, Kampung Nelayan Air Masin fishing village was a quaint village that built on the stilts above muddy mangrove shoreline. The settlement is home to the people whom mostly engaged in fishing and catering for tourists. The population here are mostly Chinese.

Next, we drove to Tanjung Pia Johor National Park. Tanjung Pia is not only a cape of Peninsular Malaysia, but also the southernmost tip point of mainland Asia. When we walked along the wooden walkway, CC commented the scenery here was breath-taking, and a bit similar to Taiwan GaoMei Wetland that we visited last year. The difference between the two wetlands are the sea breeze of GaoMei  Wetland was very strong and wind turbines were built nearby. While viewed from one of Tanjung Pia observatory deck, we could see the oil tankers and cargo ships in the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Johor; Indonesia Pulau Kerimon which was just opposite of the observatory deck and large piece of mangrove forest along the shoreline. So happen the tide was on the ebb, we were so lucky to see a lot of big mudskippers and fiddler crab on the muddy swamp area.

The scenery was so beautiful, a little bit similar to Taiwan GaoMei Wetland that we visited last year.

Pulau Kerimon
Opposite the observatory deck is Pulau Kerimon of Indonesia

The other observatory deck with a huge globe was under maintenance, so we were not able to enter this important landmark of Tanjung Pia. That meant we did not stand on the southernmost tip point of mainland Asia for this visit, but just stood at the other observatory deck and viewed on the cape. From far, we could see the reclamation construction was in full swing. Don’t know why, we just felt heart pain when saw on the construction.

The sea breeze was blowing gently, smelling the air with light salty sea taste, we simply sat down on the bench at the observatory deck, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and beautiful scenery here. CC who is a natural lover, couldn’t help but just lie on the bench and said that he wanted to take a nap with the scenery and enjoyed its beauty. Unfortunately, as soon as the kids saw their dad lying on the bench, they immediately regarded him as a human meat pillow, hugged him, and played with him.

It was so comfortable here, we couldn't help but just lie down on the bench to enjoy the beauty of nature.

On the way back to hotel, initially we planned to buy some famous Pineapple Tarts from Nictar Pipeapple House when passed by Pekan Nanas, but we forgot and missed the junction already. In order to back hotel early and let the kids rest after day long, so we did not make U turn to Nictar Pineapple House. We just stopped at a fruit stall on the roadside and bought some nicely cut pineapples and eat. Too bad, the boss told his pineapples were not from local, but were from Philippines. Anyhow we yet stubborn enough till must eat the pineapples from Pekan Nanas, as we wanted to eat fruits only and kids needed the nutrition too… haha.

West Part of Johor Family Trip 7 days 6 nights (Day 2)

Sanrio Hello Kitty Town + Thomas Town Puteri Harbour Iskandar Puteri

Day 2 route: Sanrio Hello Kitty Town + Thomas Town Puteri Harbour Iskandar Puteri

When we learnt that Sanrio Hello Kitty Town & Thomas Town is an indoor theme park that similar to Genting First World, we decided to put this place as the main destination within our Johor trip itinerary. The reason is Malaysia weather is very hot, holding a 2 years old toddler under the hot sun could be very torturing, as adult and children might be sweaty, and we worried if they felt very uncomfortable that might lead them to throw tantrum too! Then it will be a nightmare! Furthermore, our best friends will bring their kids (3 and 2 years old) to join us for a day trip, so we found this might be an ideal place to occupy the kids while adults can have some gathering chit-chatting too. After we spend our entire day in this theme park, we felt this was really a good choice, no regret at all. We strongly recommend the parents who have children aged 10 or below to bring their children to this indoor theme park.

The opening hour for Sanrio Hello Kitty Town & Thomas Town is from 10am-6pm.This is a 3-storey indoor theme park. We reached there earlier. After we parked the car at the theme park basement car park, we took a short walk at the Puteri Harbour. We could see some yachts moored at the harbour and a row of restaurants facing the harbour that allowing people to enjoy the food while watching the view of the harbour. You can have your dinner here after enjoyed your day at the theme park. To be short, Puteri Harbour is a quay side lifestyle retail and family entertainment complex, which is very convenient for parents with young children. For added convenience, you can consider to stay at Hotel Jen, next to Sanrio Hello Kitty Town & Thomas Town.

1st floor Hello Kitty Town, 2nd floor Pingu, Bob Builder, Barney, 3rd floor Thomas Town

We had bought the online tickets in advance. The ticket we bought was a Two-Park Pass that we could entered the Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town. Although the children that under 3 years old is free admittance, we still needed to present his identity card for verification. Honestly, if you come with children, it is enough to visit one of the theme parks in one day. Aside of the indoor amusement park like Genting First World, there are live stage shows that similar to Disneyland for Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town. Each of the theme parks presented 3 live shows. Each show took around 30 minutes. Thus, we were having 6 live shows to watch on one day! Every floor also with playground or play gym, and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town does have the DIY craft activities too. We really tired on that day as we had to keep on taking the lift up and down to watch the live stage shows. However, we still missed  2 of the live shows and other games, though we had come here at 10am, and play till the staffs broadcast to reminds people that it was time for their theme park to be closed, then only we end our day here. It is really not enough time to finish two theme parks in one day.

We directly had our dinner at the restaurant near the theme park exit. The most hilarious thing was it was the very first time we were told by the restaurant staffs that their kitchen was running out of gas and couldn’t serve the dishes we ordered. Fortunately, the restaurant still had rotating sushi to serve the guests, else we might have had to starve to dead. After dining, it took about 10 minutes’ drive to reach our hotel- Somerset Medini Iskandar Puteri. This hotel is not as near as Hotel Jen to Sanrio Hello Kitty Town & Thomas Town, but it is still considered quiet near and convenient for us.

Our kids first time played this spinning cup, they loved it so much and repeatedly played this for more than 3 times!

West Part of Johor Family Trip 7 days 6 nights (Day 1)

Day 1 route: Petaling- Yong Peng- Iskandar Puteri

We always plan to pay a visit for our best friend who had just settled his new home at Johor two years ago. During my children school holidays, we went back to Johor, a place that I had left 13 years ago. I used to live there for 5 years. We wished to grab this chance to explore deeper to other district of Johor that fall on the west part of this state, Yong Peng- Iskandar Puteri- Pontian- Batu Pahat- Muar.

Last time when I back hometown by bus express, it will do a pit stop halfway at Yong Peng. I felt it was a drag as I wished I could reach my hometown sooner. However, ever since I had children, I had change my mind. Travel with kids, it is impossible for us to drive continuously without do any pit stop. We need to take consideration about the kids’ physical needs. In order to solve their toilet and lunches problems, we need to find suitable place to stop for them to rest. Therefore, based on the memory of 13 years ago, we did a scheduled pit stop at Yong Peng in this trip.

Compared with that year, this time I was more willing to slow down my pace and enjoying the goodness of Yong Peng. Not sure whether if this was because I was in holiday mood or I had my children’s companion?

Initially we planned to have our lunch at Restoran Hock Swee Hin for its famous FuZou Noodles, but the shop opening hour will start at 12:30pm. Thus, we changed our lunch destination to Bebola Ikan Anthony Fish Ball after we had purchased some Kong Biscuit at Kedai Kuih-Muih Eng Hin at 11:30am. Anthony Fish Ball shop can be accessed easily due to its strategic location at the corner of the shop lots.

This shop is famous for its bouncy herring fish balls and FuZhou fish balls also very delicious. The broth is very sweet and nice. Our kids like their lunch at Anthony Fish Ball here.

After lunch at Anthony Fish Ball, we went to Maxim Snack Shoppe to buy some snack as hi tea. When I saw the snack in Maxim Snack Shoppe, I wished I will have a stomach as big as a cow, so that I could taste all the snack here. They looked yummy and varieties were there. But, we can’t waste the food, so we just bought a big fried taro cake, a big popiah and 5 mini egg tarts only. I think my kids like its mini egg tarts as they finished the egg tarts within few minutes.

Legoland Theme Park & Water Park

After ate and bought the food in Yong Peng, we continued our journey towards Somerset Medini Iskandar Puteri to rest. This was the hotel apartments with 2 bedrooms, 1 living room and a fully equipped kitchen that we were going to stay for 4 nights in this trip. The favourite part of this hotel apartment is the washing machine with dryer function as well, this provided a lot of convenient for me in handling those worn clothes throughout the trip. Next to this hotel is the Medini Mall, which has some restaurants and convenience stores. If you want to go to Legoland, you can consider this apartment-style hotel, as you can walk to Legoland Theme Park & Water Park.

Day trip to KL Eco Forest Park (Hutan Simpang Bukit Nanas)

There were unexpected two days public holidays after 509 national general election. We didn’t have any advance family travel plan for that. In order to keep my three little monsters occupied, we decided to bring them to Taman Eco Rimba KL (KL Eco Forest Park).

There are two entrances to Taman Eco Rimba KL. One is at Jalan Raja Chulan, and the other one is situated at KL Tower. Initially we planned to start our Canopy Walk from Jalan Raja Chulan, but the open-air parking at Jalan Raja Chulan was under construction and temporarily closed. So, we had to change plan by parking our car at KL Tower. We found here more suitable for our family as our kids’ stamina are very weak and easily compliant of walking too much or tire.

There are a lot of mosquitoes in this old-growth forest. We did help our kids applied the mosquito repellents. It was such a wonderful feeling by walking in one of the oldest forest in the world and watching those concrete buildings of Malaysia Capital City. We often hope our children enjoy the breath of the nature.

After the short forest canopy walk, we visited KL Upside Down House which is just next to KL Eco Forest Park. Tickets purchased are required if you want to visit this upside-down house. With the assistance and guidance from a staff inside the house, we did some poses to match the upside-down furniture in order to create the feeling of us really upside down when saw the output of the photo taken. The kids were so excited about that.

Little Peke was craving for the Restoran Mei Keng Lum Mee at Pudu. To avoid the crowd during peak lunch hour, we directly went to Restoran Mei Keng after visited KL Upside Down House. Normally the traffic here is very jam, parking is rare too, but may be because it was public holiday, we found the parking right in front the restaurant only. Mei Keng Lum Mee is a traditional cuisine that carved in Little Peke’s grandparents memory. Whenever they went to Pudu wet market, they will have their Lum Mee here and will not forget to buy and pack the Lum Mee back for us to eat. Now this memory has been silently transmitted to our children.

After enjoy the food here, I took the opportunity to Kit Sheng Snack Food Trading, which is just opposite the Pudu Wet Market and bought some snacks for my children to bring to school during Teacher’s Day. Wow, the price here is cheap. It is recommended for any parents to buy the party snack here if they require a large number of party bags.

I bought a wheel back loader toy truck for Little Loupee, it costed me RM7 only! He was so happy when I gave this truck to him and kept saying: “Mommy, truck, dig dig dig…” He played with his new favorite toys all the way home.

St. John’s Institution and SK. Convent Bukit Nanas,
·         St. John’s Cathedral
·         Muzium Telekom

P/S:
If you have only one day public holiday which fall at the middle of the weekdays (for those who in klang valley), with no any advance plan travel plan, I personally recommend parents can bring their children to have a day trip to KL Eco Forest Park or so called Hutan Simpan Bukit Nanas. The reasons are:

  1. This is the only preserved forest in the city of Kuala Lumpur (it was designated a permanent forest reserve in 1906).
  2. This is a free admission forest park (7:00am - 6:00pm), but still need to pay the parking fee. Please remember to bring your own water and insect repellent.
  3. The Canopy Walk is only 200m long. It is a very simple physical exercise for children.
  4. There few attractions next to KL Eco Forest Park, e.g. KL Tower, KL Upside Down House and a mini zoo. These three places required entrances fee. Restaurant are available in these areas too, which is very convenient.
  5.  There are some historic attractions near KL Eco Forest Park: -
    ·         St. Johns Institution and SK. Convent Bukit Nanas,
    ·         St. John’s Cathedral
    ·         Muzium Telekom
